When Edgar was young, he thought he wanted to be a mechanic, or a factory worker as a career, because at the time he didn't know what else to be.
When Edgar was 18, he decided to take a train from Barrie to Saskatchewan. It took him three days to get there. Edgar decided to go west to Elrose, Saskatchewan. When he got there he drove a grain truck for a month.
Afterward, Edgar was starting to think he wanted to become a United Church minister but he still wasn't completely sure.
Then he went to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Edgar started doing construction. The problem was that it was always raining so they could not finish the construction. His boss laid them off because of all the weather.
He figured that since he was already in Saskatchewan, he might as well keep going west to see the Pacific Ocean. So he arranged a ride to Vancouver. When he got there he decided to work at the bank because at the time it was the only job he could find. The problem was that he could fall asleep while standing. He couldn't make it through half the day without a 20-minute nap in the afternoon. Edgar had narcolepsy so it was difficult to manage when he was at work. He was dealing with money so he knew this wouldn't work for him or the bank.
Edgar left the bank and was invited aboard the Thomas Crosby mission boat. He went through the inside passage between Vancouver Island and the mainland. They were visiting different logging camps up to Bella Bella.
After he finally saved enough for university, he studied for his degree to become a United Church minister. After Edgar thought about it some more, he realized he did not want to be a United Church minister. Luckily there was a shortage of teachers. So Edgar decided to work as a teacher. When he was a teacher he would have to walk around the room because of his narcolepsy, hoping he wouldn't fall asleep. He worked as a teacher for 11 years.
Then he left teaching and worked for the federal government for 25 years, until retirement in 1991. Edgar knew this was a good job because he met a lot of interesting people.
In the end, Edgar was happy he didn't have to keep moving around to find a good job, but at least he had quite an adventure.
