How It Works
GrandPals is a practical, proven model that empowers communities to run meaningful, sustainable intergenerational programs with ease and confidence.
Whether you're a teacher, community organizer, nonprofit leader, or volunteer coordinator, GrandPals gives you the tools, structure, and support needed to bring generations together through storytelling and connection.
Overview: How the Program Works
At the heart of every GrandPals program is a cohort of students and a small group of older adult volunteers. These groups meet weekly for open-ended, story-driven conversations guided by life themes such as family, learning, work, and travel.
Each program is coordinated by a local lead — a teacher, librarian, program coordinator, or volunteer champion — who ensures that all participants are supported and sessions run smoothly.

Step-by-step model:
- A Program Coordinator is identified through a local organization (e.g., school, charity, or municipality)
- The Program Coordinator secures a classroom, often by reaching out to local schools to assess interest, confirm meeting dates and times, set the discussion themes, and establish a suitable location
- Older adult volunteers (GrandPals) are recruited, vetted, and oriented — a process often supported by community champions who assist the coordinator in outreach and onboarding
- Students prepare through a curated classroom curriculum
- Weekly sessions are held in small groups over 8–12 weeks
- Stories are collected, shared, and celebrated in creative ways (e.g., books, artwork, events)
- Feedback and reflection tools are used to support continuous learning and program success
Who Can Run a Program?
GrandPals works best when rooted in an organization that brings structure and community presence. We've partnered with:
- Charities and Non-Profits
- Municipalities and Service Clubs
- Schools and Educators
- Libraries and Residences
- Churches and Faith Communities
Programs are typically led by someone who:
- Has experience working with either youth or older adults
- Can coordinate logistics like recruitment and scheduling
- Is willing to facilitate or oversee weekly sessions
- Believes in the power of storytelling and connection
