Core Values & Principles
Simplicity, Impact, and Sustainability
Simplicity
We focus on ease of use — designing tools and resources that are simple to adopt, so local champions spend less time on logistics and more time on what matters: people and connection.
Impact
We believe meaningful relationships have the power to transform lives and strengthen communities.
Connection: Meaningful relationships between generations are essential to strong communities.
Empathy: Students grow in compassion and understanding through authentic dialogue with older adults.
Storytelling: Story is a powerful tool for teaching, listening, reflection, and transformation.
Dignity: Every person — and every story — holds inherent worth, no matter their age.
Sustainability
We design for the long term — creating tools and processes that make intergenerational programs easy to implement, safe, high quality, and well evaluated. By supporting financial and operational sustainability, we help communities build programs that last — and grow. Our model makes it easier to replicate and scale successful programs across diverse settings.
Collaboration: We work alongside schools, community organizations, volunteers, and sponsors to build programs that reflect the needs and gifts of each community — ensuring they are rooted, resilient, and responsive over time.
Our Guiding Priniciples
1
Do With, Not For
GrandPals is not a service project. It’s a partnership — rooted in mutual respect and shared contribution between students and older adults.
2
Every Story Matters
We treat every story as a window into human experience. Whether lighthearted or life-shaping, stories are how we connect, learn, and grow.
3
Support Local Ownership
We believe intergenerational programs thrive when led by trusted local organizations that reflect the strengths and values of their community.
4
Quality Over Quantity
We prioritize strong, safe, well-supported programming that builds real relationships — not just impressive numbers.
5
Celebrate Progress
Whether a community is running one classroom or ten, we celebrate each step toward greater connection and shared understanding.
