Kim’s Eggy Job

When Kim was 12 years old, she had a job in a town called Erin, Ontario. She got the job from her sister, Gwenda, who had it before her but didn’t enjoy it because it was very smelly.

When Gwenda got her G licence and a new job that she could drive to, Kim took over the job.

Kim’s job was to collect eggs from an egg farm for $1.60 per hour, just like her sister.

She would get to work on her bike, which would be around a 40-minute ride. Some days her parents would drop her off instead. She worked for five hours per day to earn $8.00. Kim would usually save her money for something she really wanted, like flip-flops.

She worked with two other people. Sometimes the others spent a lot of time talking, and Kim felt that she had to keep more of the work moving. Her boss also used a machine to wash and clean the eggs. It looked like a metal ball.

You would have to put eggs in the holes, then stack them on top of each other. There were eight cats at the farm that always followed Kim because they loved the eggs. Whenever there was a dirty or old egg, Kim would smash it on the floor and the cats would eat it raw. None of the cats had any names, but they still created this fun memory for Kim.

After two summers, Kim stopped working at the egg farm. Even though she didn’t make much money during her time there, she is still grateful for the experience. She had responsibility at a young age, and this taught her discipline.
