When my GrandPal Nancy was in Grade One, her teacher was Mrs. Unsworth. One day during snack time, Nancy went to the front of the class to get an apple slice. She ate a little slower than usual because she thought she had to wait. But class started while she was still eating.
Mrs. Unsworth didn’t like that. She told Nancy to stand in the corner. Nancy felt very embarrassed. She remembered feeling awkward and upset.
It felt like all eyes were on her. Nobody in the class said anything afterward. But Nancy told her parents what happened. Mrs. Unsworth was usually a strict teacher.
Nancy never forgot that day. But she didn’t let it stop her from enjoying school. In fact, she started to like it more. She made close friends, like Milly and Sandra.
Some classmates even stood up for her when things got tough. Her classroom was big and spacious. The school was about 20 minutes from her house. The boys’ and girls’ playgrounds were on opposite sides of the building.
Nancy said she felt a little nervous around her teacher after that day. But the memory stayed with her. She still shares the story with her children and grandchildren. And if she ever saw Mrs. Unsworth again?
Nancy says she’d just tell the story and laugh.
