Running Home for Chores
This is the story of my GrandPal, who took initiative and surprised his Dad. One day, one of my GrandPal's neighbors, Billy Taylor, was having an auction sale. The auction was on Towline, between Amaranth and East Luther. Billy was quitting farming and selling what he didn’t need; he was an old man who couldn’t do the work anymore. My GrandPal's Dad, Arnold, was working at the auction sale as the clerk. Arnold was great at being the clerk, because he knew everybody there and paid good attention. The clerk writes down who bought each item and for how much.
My GrandPal was excited to go to the auction, because he could play with the other kids. Also, some church women were selling things like coffee, tea, pie, hotdogs, muffins, cookies, and sandwiches. The food and drinks were 10-20 cents, and Arnold would give my GrandPal a little bit of money to buy some.
Around the end of the afternoon, my GrandPal and his Dad had chores to do back at the farm. So, my GrandPal ran a mile east towards home by himself to do the chores and got to work. He wanted to help his dad and show that he was becoming more mature and growing up. He worked hard on collecting eggs and feeding oats to two hundred hens, feeding a grain and water mixture to around twenty pigs, and feeding the fifty cattle with different types of dry grain and hay. My GrandPalhad to make these mixtures by himself. All this took him about an hour to do.
Then my GrandPal ran back to the auction. His dad didn’t even know he had gone home! When his Dad said that they had to head back to do the chores, my GrandPal revealed that he had already done them! Arnold was happy, because he could finish things up and talk to people. My GrandPal felt great, because he surprised his Dad with something he didn’t have to do.
