The School Boots
When my GrandPal was 16 and in Grade 12, she went to a private school called Alma College. She loved Alma College. There was adventure, it was tough, and she made lots of friends and is still in contact with some of them. All the students wore a uniform consisting of a red blazer and little, ugly, black, Oxford boots. My GrandPal had lots of pins and buttons on her blazer from all the clubs she joined. She loved softball, drama, and also was in a choir. Alma College was an all-girls school, and every 3 months, they would have a dance.
The school was an old, stone castle with a grand staircase. On the night of the dance, all the girls had to walk down the big spiral staircase, and the dean and principal would ensure their dresses were appropriate. Some girls wore long, nice dresses with dress shoes, and others wore nice dresses and shoes. My GrandPal came down in a nice dress but with the little, black, ugly boots. Her friends had dared her to wear the boots for six dollars.
The principal and dean told my GrandPal she had to go upstairs and change her shoes, or she wouldn't be allowed to go to the dance. She apologized and went to her bedroom to change her shoes. While she was in her room, her roommate dared her to throw the boots out the window. Five or six girls came into my GrandPal's room, saying, “I bet you won’t throw the boots out the window.” She took them up on their dare and she threw the boots out the window.
The one thing that my GrandPal had not anticipated was that there were construction workers outside, below the window, who were working on some stones around the building. When she threw the boots out the window, they ended up landing on one of the construction workers! While my GrandPal's friends thought it was hilarious, the construction worker who got hit went inside the school and told the principal. My GrandPal got in loads of trouble and had to go down and apologize to the construction workers. Fortunately, they were very gracious and forgave her easily!
